The trend of cosmetic tattoos is growing rapidly.  There are many reasons why a person may want permanent makeup:

  • Allergic to cosmetics
  • Cannot see to apply cosmetics
  • Want to reshape their brows, eyes
  • Want to cover small scars
  • Want to create the illusion of fuller brows
  • They have lost eyebrow hairs and need to fill in
  • Want eyelashes to appear thicker
  • They want to swim or workout and still look like they have their makeup on
  • They have shakey hands and cannot apply makeup correctly
  • They want a consistent “look” to their makeup
  • They are going to have chemo and know they will loose facial hair
  • They have alopecia and cannot grow hair or eyelashes
  • They want to enhance their eyelash line to make lashes look thicker
  • They want to save time by waking up with makeup already on

Pigment is etched into the epidermis layer of the skin.  Unlike tattooing of the body, permanent cosmetics actually fade over time so they are not as permanent as a body tattoo.

A cosmetic tattoo can last from 1-8 years without a retouch.

Permanent makeup will save you time and money.

Cosmetic tattoos, also known as micropigmentation, and permanent makeup has been done for many years and is growing in popularity across the world.  Baby Boomers and older adults are the target market for these services which include permanent eyeliner, eyebrows, lipliner, scar coverage, camouflage, and areola pigmentation to name a few.  Mostly women get these services but more and more men are using permanent cosmetics to enhance their eyebrows, cover scars, camouflage, hair simulation, and enhance lash lines, called guyliner.

Frequently Asked Questions about Permanent Cosmetics

Are procedures safe?

Yes, if performed by a trained professional who follows proper disinfection and sterilization requirements set forth by OSHA.   At Michelle Larson’s Cosmetic Tattoo Parlour,  all needles are sterile, prepackaged, and disposed of immediatley after a service into a Sharps biohazard container.

Considerations before booking an appointment for cosmetic tattoo procedures:

  • Most people get some swelling with any and all of the procedures so do not schedule appointment prior to special meetings or events where you want to look your best.
  • It will take a few days for the swelling to go down.
  • Procedures heal at different rates of speed depending on your skin type, lifestyle, general health, and post care.  This is why your followup appointment is made about 6 weeks after your initial procedure appointment.
  • Many people do not share with friends and coworkers that they are having a procedure.  People will notice you look better, younger, or different but may not realize you had a permanent cosmetic procedure.  We recommend you tell them once you are completely healed in about 4-6 weeks.
  • Eyebrows, eyeliner, and lips will all appear darker than they ultimately will be when completely healed.  Do not be alarmed, expect it.
  • Please read the Tattoo Candidate page

Who can benefit from permanent cosmetics?

  • Women who have little time, shakey hands or poor eyesight and still want to have the look of makeup
  • Athletes or people who swim or want to workout without their makeup smudging
  • Alopecia (loss of hair) patients and pre-chemotherapy patients who want eyebrows, eyeliner or lipliner
  • Those with small facial scars and want to camouflage them
  • Those with sparce or over tweezed eyebrows
  • Mastectomy patients who have had breast re-construction
  • Those allergic to traditional makeup
  • Those who have thin lips and want to make them appear fuller and more defined
  • Those who wear contacts and don’t want their eyeliner to get under their lenses

Do the procedures hurt like getting a tattoo?

NO, although there may be some discomfort.  Everyone has a different threshold for pain.  We apply topical anesthetic during your consultation.   More topical anesthetics are applied frequently during the procedure.     If you feel some discomfort, it will all be worth it.

Do you do areola pigmentation?

Not at this time but we plan to add this very important service soon.

Can I bring a friend with me to my procedure?

Yes, in fact you can both receive a procedure if scheduled in advance.

Can I get my eyebrows and eyelash enhancing done in the same appointment?

YES , just remember, it will be a long day as each service will take about 2-3 hours.

Do you freehand draw on my procedure or use a template?

After our consultation we’ll make a decision for a design style.  We will draw on your eyebrows with a cosmetic pencil.   If you want them thinner, thicker, higher, lower, more arched etc., we will change them.  This part of the appointment can take a long time as we create your desired look.  The final design becomes the template for the procedure.  Bring your makeup, we like to see what you like.  No 24 hour color stay products.

Should I wax my eyebrows prior to my procedure?

Yes, but at least 2 days in advance of an eyebrow service is recommended so the skin has healed from the waxing process.  Once you have had a cosmetic tattoo,  you should wait at least 2 weeks before waxing or before doing electrolysis.

Can I receive facial laser treatments?

Yes, but your cosmetic tattoo must be covered to avoid color change.  Tell your technician prior to treatment.

Can I get an MRI?

Yes, tell the technician prior to the MRI that you have cosmetic tattoos.

What causes the procedures to fade?

  • exposure to the sun (you should wear sunscreen each day)
  • effects of medication
  • hormonal changes
  • skin exfolliation products on the procedure area
  • scrubbing the area with a facecloth
  • inadequate post procedure care

When do I need a retouch?

Retouches are done about 6 weeks after initial procedure if necessary or when you pick up an eye pencil to fill in your brows or eyeliner then it is time to book a retouch appointment.
